Being a writer isn’t just something you do. It’s something you are. For me, it means conveying ideas in a clear, concise and compelling way. Every word I write is in service to answering the reader’s (usually) unspoken question: “Why should I care?”

Achieving this requires a deep understanding of the message, the medium and the target audience. And a willingness to let the copy evolve to a smarter, tighter version of its first-draft self. There are few things I enjoy more than editing text when I first see it in layout — or after I’ve taken a break from it and can view it with fresh eyes. It’s like pruning a recalcitrant plant to reveal the beauty of its natural contours. Who wouldn’t dig that?*
